Due to the Coronavirus, we are no longer running the Bring Your Own Bike sessions. For now, we’ve compiled a few choice resources that might be helpful for those looking to maintain their bike at home. We look forward to welcoming everyone back into the workshop as soon as is safe to do so, but for now, we hope these are helpful.
Park Tool videos
These videos are well paced, informative, and cover a wide range of bikes. Well worth a watch, especially for gear indexing and brake adjustment issues – the two most common issues we see at Bring Your Own Bike.
How to Build a Bike!
For those who prefer a book over Youtube, you can get a really accessible, practical guide to bike maintenance whilst also supporting another open workshop, this one in London.
Keep it clean!
No matter how well your bike is behaving it is likely it would benefit from a clean – to ensure it is ready to roll once all this is behind us. The Global Cycle Network have a number of great videos worth watching, but here is one that shows how to give your bike a thorough clean. Just remember to re-oil your chain, and ignore the fact is looks pretty clean to start with!
Sheldon Brown’s website is like an online bike encyclopedia. The wheel building section is also great – a perfect new skill to learn from home! https://www.sheldonbrown.com/
Support your Local Bike Shop (LBS)
It is also important to remember that as bike shops have been designated as essential services many of them in are still operating. If you aren’t confident working on your own bike, why not leave it to the professionals and book it in for a service.
